One beautiful day four girls break out to visit their "secret nooks" together, although they are "already too big to possess a secret nook". "There were a lot of emotions in us, but we didn’t show them. Our eyes shone. I believe that every person has a secret place, whether it’s in his heart or some place outside." The girls built their own gardens in the gardens allotted to their fathers by their employer, the nearby atomic power plant. "In my garden I have the feeling I’m floating on a cloud," writes one girl.

Karima and Assema show the visitors from Vienna around Pierrelatte, with its green avenues and yellow, typically three-story social housing. With lowered heads they pass various groups of boys of all sizes and age groups hanging around with studied casualness. The massive presence is clearly noticeable. The two girls hurry to reach the entrance of the social centre. Here Emma has rented a hall for three weeks, so that the girls can meet Friday afternoons after the end of the school week. Only girls are allowed in. The laughter can be heard from the other side of the door.
