„MÄDCHENGARTEN“ IN VIENNA
HISTORY

In the autumn of 2003 the “Girl-Movement-Space” congress was held here. Sex-specific socialisation, female use of space and the structural-spatial realities of open public spaces were debated in depth. The informal talks were published in autumn 2004 and can be ordered from the Wirbel Association:
wirbel@frauenweb.at

The Wirbel Association has devoted 2006 to exchanges with international projects for free spaces dedicated to girls. Three selected “best practice“ projects were put up on the homepage, which was supplemented as well by links to other international girls projects. The goal was to establish an information platform and to promote international networking.

The Mädchengarten is a pilot project and contributes substantially to raising the profile of feminist girls’ work in Vienna. As a place only for girls it offers unique possibilities for developing their spatial and social competence.
